Nutrition claims on packaging should meet the requirements of the European Claims Regulation. Products labeld with texts such as 'light ' and ' more fibers' must have a specific components to be allowed to use a nutrition claim, for example ‘30% less fat than comparable products’. On July 31, 2009 the transitional period expired. So all packaging and advertisements for nutritional claims should now be in line with legislation. Recently, the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (VWA) has investigated whether producers has anticipated this new legislation. The outcome was disappointing: more than half (!) of the labelling is still not in accordance with the Claims Directive. Therefore, the VWA has announced that they will monitor this very strictly. When VWA encounters a product that is violating the Claims Regulation a written warning will follow at once! Ebba Hoogenraad
