Mandatory warning for food colours in sweets
'This product contains azo-food colours. May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.' As from 20 July 2010 you will find this warning on labels of products that contain azo-colours*. This new obligation follows from directive EC 1333/2008.
A study of the University of Southampton would demonstrate a link between these food colours and hyperactivity. Critics say there was no need to change the legislation on E-numbers. The six azo-food colours would not have been tested individually, so it is not clear what azo-food colour caused hyperactivity. The British study is controversial. However, manufacturers of sweets, desserts and lemonade that use azo-food colours can not avoid the mandatory warning.
Many manufacturers have indicated to switch to the use of other colours. Exit for brightly coloured sweets!
