Brewer Olm has annoyed the alcohol industry, united in the interest group STIVA. On 7 November Olm hosts the "Olm StudentenWereldRecord" (Olm student world record). The aim is to gather as much students as possible to drink a glass of Olm together. The action is promoted by a YouTube video in which a student drinks a large glass of Olm. At the event Olm beer is free. According to the website dedicated to the promotion, participating clubs and fraternities can win supplies of Olm. In a press release STIVA calls the action stupid and threatens to file a complaint with the Advertising Code Committee. "The alcohol industry adheres to the rules of responsible alcohol marketing. An action like that of Olm in 2010 is really not done." Olm sees no problem with its promotion.
Alcohol advertising is strictly regulated in the Netherlands. The rules can be found in the Advertising Code for Alcoholic beverages (RVA). For example, alcohol advertising is not allowed to show or encourage excessive alcohol consumption. Also, alcohol advertising may not not show persons under the age of 25 (or who look younger than 25!) that drink alcohol. Whether the YouTube video meets these requirements seems doubtful. Giving away alcoholic beverages is not permitted under the Advertising Code for Alcoholic beverages.
Unfortunately for Dutch students it seems to me that the promotion will not take place. The whole promotion seems more like a marketing ploy to bring Olm to the attention of as much students as possible.
Olm, from me to you.
