SPOT is the Dutch centre of expertise for marketing and advertising on the television. This lobby organisation has responded to the long heard call to turn down the volume of television commercials. Nowadays, consumers are exposed to many commercial messages on a daily basis. On top of this, the commercials on the television are too noisy. A thorn in the side of many, but this is about to come to an end.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has introduced new guidelines to which the commercials from 1 September 2011 have to comply.
What is the consequence? Should advertising from 1 September only be whispered into the living rooms of consumers? No, it's not so bad. SPOT even argues that the new rules will create more room for better speech intelligibility and for even more creative use of sound dynamics. The quality of the commercials will thereby increase. In other words, a great opportunity for advertisers. And that's not all! At the same time the volume is turned down, the picture quality is tuned up, because the SPOT channels are switched to HD quality. Besides this, the channels will also change to a "multichannel audio" system, allowing the ads to run via a surround system.
Practically speaking: As of 1 September 2011, you have deliver the commercials and promos in the (R128) standard to the broadcasters. Until 1 January 2012 the channels will be tolerant towards non-compliant commercials, but from that moment on, the stations will only accept compliant material. New rules, but also new opportunities for advertisers, which is music to the ears!
