I am sure you are familiar with these offers of supermarkets in which pounds of meat are offered for giveaway prices. Especially the 'kiloknallers’(meat bargains) of C1000 are a thorn in the flesh of Wakker Dier, the well-known animal welfare organization. According to Wakker Dier animals suffer because of these indecent low prices. And that is made clear in its radio commercial: "No hay, no daylight, no space. For indecent low meat prices at C1000, millions of animals are treated indecent as well. Time for another supermarket. Wake up with Wakker Dier.”
An unknown complainant filed a complaint against the commercial at the Dutch Advertising Code Committee (ACC). According to the ACC Wakker Dier is able to substantiate its critical message sufficiently. It is not disputed that the lack of sawdust, daylight and space lead to different welfare problems for chickens being sold at C1000. And the same applies for pigs and cattle. Besides Wakker Dier may express its opinion about the low meat prices. The ACC rules that the way Wakker Dier promotes this opinion is not a violation of the Dutch Advertising Code.
Wakker Dier is in the winning mood. In June a complaint against the Wakker Dier commercial with the message "Chicken, even cheaper than cat food. What kind of life do you think this chicken had" was rejected. This message was also sufficient substantiated by Wakker Dier.
